Ayla Rigouts Terryn is also an editor, together with Patrick Drouin, of a special issue on computational terminology for the periodical Terminology, expected to be published later this year.

Ward Franco (rightmost in the picture) is awarded the third prize in the thesis competition of the Belgian Chamber of Translators an Interpreters. His master thesis, entitled Domain Loss or Gain? An EU legislative text corpus and termbase study, was written in the context of the Termraad Academy project. Sonia Vandepitte was the thesis supervisor, Els Lefever was co-supervisor.

The October 2020 version of IATE's excel list of COVID terms lists the English terms alongside corresponding links to the multilingual IATE entries but none of these links, bar a few, are clickable. Our downloads page now contains a version with clickable links as well as a conversion to Multiterm that can be used for term recognition in SDL Trados Studio. We will also keep track of future updates that the EU may make available.

January 2021

The University of Ghent and the University of Mainz have obtained EU funding for exploring the interpreter's booth of tomorrow. CvT-member Bart Defrancq is one of the promoters of the project. The artificial booth mate will be able to accurately and rapidly display terms and numbers on a screen during real-time speech, using automatic speech recognition. Els Lefever takes over as Head of the CvT. Els is an assistant professor at the LT3 language and translation technology team. She takes a special interest in computational semantics, cross-lingual word sense disambiguation and multilingual terminology extraction. As a teacher in the Department of Translation, Interpreting and Communication, she is involved in courses on terminology and language technology.

The GenTerm database now uses a different search engine and can be reached from outside the UGent network using CAS-codes. The new 'Poirot' architecture has the added advantage of allowing a quick preview of any chosen term record; download of htm-type records is also much faster than before.

The home page has been revamped to reflect staff changes, most of which will take effect on October 1st, 2016. Joost Buysschaert will retire but remains active in the CvT's projects and as webmaster. Bart Defrancq will take over as Acting Head but in due time Els Lefever, our new assistant professor of terminology, is likely to take charge of the Centre. Sara Vandewaetere left us earlier to take up a job in Brussels. Klaar Vanopstal has switched to another post within the Faculty but will remain an Associate Member of the CvT. Finally, Sonia Vandepitte joins the Centre as one of the new thesis supervisors in the IATE-CvT project.

CvT members met today to discuss changes in staffing and in the management of the projects. Most of these changes will take effect on October 1st and will be documented in due time on the respective pages of this site. The site will also have to be adjusted to the new house style that the University will introduce later this month.

GenTerm Minerva is launched. This site on UGent's Minerva platform replaces the Chamilo site on HoGent's electronic learning environment. This password protected site contains materials for students and staff who work on the department's terminological projects. The long-awaited version 3.2 of ELeCT, the Electronic Lexicon of Communication Terminology (7 languages) has finally become available for download. See our EDiCT page and follow the link to the download page. The new version of the lexicon offers many additions and a number of corrections, while the superb search facilities have been maintained. A 24-hour trial period gives you the opportunity to check out the merits of the lexicon before you decide to pay for a licence (standard price 25 EUR).

The site has been readied for the new academic year. The new name Faculty of applied language studies has replaced the old name.  Furthermore, a link has been added to the new electronic learning environment Chamilo (staff and students only). Two pages of other external links have also been added.

It is now possible to make an IATE search straight from the CvT's website.

Chamilo, the Faculty's new Electronic Learning Environment now boasts a site devoted to the CvT's projects.  It is called GenTerm in Chamilo and is accessible for students and staff only. The data from the former ELO have been transferred to the new site and a number of documents have been updated in the process. Thanks to the technical expertise of LT3, the site also incorporates a new search engine for consulting the CvT 's GenTerm records. This search function, which is only accessible on campus or via VPN, will soon replace the old Dokeos search engine.

Further talks with the DGT have resulted in detailed agreements on how the CvT will run the new IATE-CvT Project.  The essence of the project is that Master students will contribute to IATE's consolidation initiatives in the framework of their MA Dissertation.

Sevdag Kaya (Turkish Section) and Jo Hautekiet (Russian Section) have joined the CvT . Sevdag will focus on EU terminology (English-Dutch-Turkish) and Jo's primary aim will be to supervise theses that can supply Russian equivalents to our MeSH Termbase Project.

University College Ghent has decided to reorganize and rename its faculties. The new name of our Faculty will be Faculty of applied language studies. The name change will take effect in the Autumn of 2011, when we will adjust this site to the new situation.

A further name change may be expected for the autumn of 2013, when we are set to join the Faculty of Letters of Ghent University.

December 2010 - other miscellaneous news

The DGT (Directorate-General for Translation, European Commission) has expressed enthusiasm for the CvT 's proposal to devote MA dissertations to selected IATE problems.  The project will be part of the Faculty's contribution as an EMT-member.

Tentative talks have started between the CvT and IVS-iscientia to see whether the latter could make data from the MeSH Termbase Project available via licensing to selected groups of healthcare professionals.

It has been agreed in principle that the CvT will host Tint 2011, the annual terminology day of Steunpunt Nederlandstalige Terminologie . The event has provisionally been planned for December 2011.
